Balaton Sound, Electric Castle Announce First Names for 2017

Sziget has not announced any new names yet, but we can already speculate on who we will – and will not – see at the 2017 anniversary edition based on what other festivals either under Sziget’s umbrella (Volt, Balaton Sound) or other festivals in the area (Electric Castle, Untold) announce. The first artists and bands to participate at some have seen the light of day today.

Update: Hungary Today hints on Bastille coming to Sziget 2017. I personally think it’s a mistake that sneaked into the article (it looks like a confusion by the author who wrote Sziget instead of Strand), but you can never say never.

Strand Festival, held every year in August on the shores of Lake Balaton, has recently announced that British indie pop band Bastille will be performing at Strand on August 24th, 2017. The band, who performed two years ago at VOLT Festival, and at Sziget Festival this past year, will be playing at the 2017 Sziget Festival as well.

(full article here)

Bastille has its live schedule listed on its website until next August. They will play at Bramham Park in Leeds on the 25th, the Reading Festival on the 26th, and Leeds Festival on the 27th of August. Neither Strand Festival (the 24th), nor Sziget is listed there. So, we’ll see.

Thanks @Steven Gehner for the catch.

There is another major Eastern European festival – Untold, also taking place in Cluj-Napoca – is expected to announce its headliners. The interest for the festival is massive – according to a recent press release, the batch of 5,000 passes that were made available last Friday sold out in approximately 3 minutes. The third chapter of the festival will take place between the 3rd and 6th of August.

Last year, Untold shared quite a few names with Sziget: Hardwell, Parov Stelar, Afrojack, Fedde le Grand, and John Digweed, among others. Among its headliners, there were quite a few big EDM and electornica names (check out their complete 2016 lineup here).

Hopefully, Sziget will not keep us on the edge of our seats for long, and will give us a few names to be excited about.

Strand Festival, held every year in August on the shores of Lake Balaton, has recently announced that British indie pop band Bastille will be performing at Strand on August 24th, 2017. 2. Bastille could be a solid sub for the main stage:). Not my cup of tea but they are massivly popular

  3. First Frequency names: Mumford and Sons – Billy Talent – Rise Against – Moderat – White Lies – Sub Focus – Foreign Beggars – Wanda

First Zürich Openair names: Mumford and Sons – Major Lazer – The Prodigy – Kygo

I would be happy with Mumford, Moderat, White Lies and Sub Focus.

  4. It must be a mistake regarding Bastille.. Sziget/Volt/Sziget/Strand… no way they’d play again!
I’d take the same as you 🙂 + Rise Against
    Very excited for White Lies!!

  5. So now we are 100% sure Mumford will be the first headliner.

I think the august festivals begged them, because the lack of mainstream headliner bands.

Very big possibilities even for The prodigy and Major Lazer (also rumored for untold) to headline in my opinion.

There are not so big names in Europe in august but there is the possibility to do a very strong lineup like in 2014 in my opinion.
With also Kasabian, Placebo, Moderat, Justice, Rise against, White Lies, Pixies, Franz Ferdinand all being around it could be veeeery fun.

  6. I’m seriously asking why would anyone want the same old shit like prodigy for every single year? Why do you still live in the 90s? Why don’t you discover new and quality music? it just takes a few clicks…

  7. I personally don’t want Prodigy, I just think they will do august festivals.

By the way I think a lot of people here listen to new artists/not so famous artists etc, don’t worry you are not alone.

And in any case not only because something is from the 90’s or early 2000 means it’s rubbish, while something new is good

  8. your last sentence is 100% true bobo.

there are classics that are still relevant, and there are artist who live off the past without adding any quality stuff to their catalog for decades. The latter shouldn’t be tolarated.

  9. Guess by Art you mean me, but Radiohead is obviously the first category. Classic and always will be relevant with their ever growing catalog.

  10. Zürich openair, on 22 til 26 of august, just anounced their first names.

    – Mumford & Sons
    – The Prodigy
    – Kygo
    – Major Lazer

  11. Mumford and Sons would be a good addittion, not a band I would die to watch a show but still good music and great performance… Major Lazer is a big nop for me, 2015 was really enough for me, and Im not talkin about the sand around the stage, they were actually worse than every expectation.
Prodigy is good, but IMHO it’s 25th anniversary, be more creative. Also the pit is too violent for an electronic performance, I couldnt appreciate it back in the day (also ’cause in 2014 I think they did some mess with the audio or stuff)

  12. Yeah I don’t want Prodigy neither… but with the classic lack of bands in august I think it’s quite inevitable.

    So, apart from Mumfords:

Prodigy, Kasabian, Placebo,… seems like a sziget all star lineup for the 25th anniversary ahah! We predicted it some months ago right here if I remember well

  13. we will see at 15 December 😀 . Im Oke with The Prodigy . i saw them many times but i still like their insane show 😀

  14. So now we just have to wait untill john doe appears…

John, please start the game and give us some hints 🙂

  15. My wish, but it’s not too realistic:
    Arcade Fire (MS Headliner)
    Biffy Clyro/Foals/Kasabian (MS Headliner)
    Billy Talent (MS Afternoon)
    Netsky (A38)
    Nero (A38)
    Run The Jewels (A38)
    Skepta/Stormzy (A38)
    Slaves (A38)

Instead of that they’ll probably announce this:
    Mumford & Sons (MS Headiner)
    Major Lazer (MS Headliner)
    Imagine Dragons (MS Sub)
    Billy Talent (MS Afternoon)
    Netsky (A38)
    Birdy (A38)
    Zara Larsson (A38)
    Marshmello (Arena)

  16. Well they kinda did the same thing with Pinkpop in The Netherlands. But lets wait for a couple of hours…

  17. Very happy for Green Day. There are few (pop) punk band that are worth to be seen live (ANTIFLAG) and they ain’t one of them; sad for Rancid, but we cant always win, tho.

Also, it was predictable: no way for a band like Green Day to do an european tour that last 3 months, same goes for SOAD and Prophets of Rage – sadly, imho.

I dont know what to think honestly, but it seems to me that most of the big names in tour this summer will be on a break during the Sziget period and it scares me a bit, since last time I felt this way we had Ellie Goulding headlining the festival (‘cept for the fact that this year the Sziget in its full experience it’s gonna cost almost 100 € more, taking in consideration every aspect).

  18. The Weeknd has just been announced for the Open’er Festival in Poland (June, 30th). Given the fact that he will finish US part of his world tour on June, 9th it seems possible that Open’er could be a European kick-off for him with some July dates and maybe beginning of August.
He certainly fits current Sziget direction plus he will make a sold-out day for the festival for sure. Also something to take into account – he was sub-headlining Rihanna’s last year world tour but he wasn’t brought to Sziget, so maybe they had a kind of pre-agreement. No facts with this, just speculating.

  19. Yes, The Weeknd will be headlining Open’er along with Radiohead and Foo Fighters, who would’ve thought?!
Btw, i just checked that he actually canceled all European dates with Rihanna last year, so Sziget might be kicking the tires to get him due to lack of “mainstream headliners” for August

  20. Actually The Weeknd this month is the most streamed artist on Spotify worldwide. I’m afraid we’ll get him as the pop headliner.

  21. I think both he and Gaga have made very good albums recently and are doing very good live performances for what I can see, even if it’s not my genre.

Taking account of: Ellie goulding, Mika, Rihanna, Sia (actually good show), and I’m not even going to mention Pop djs…… The Weeknd (or Gaga) are two very good options for our pop slot/slots.

The problem is: Macklemore doing festivals.

  22. I actually enoyed both 🙁
I dont know anything about The Weeknd, will probably give him a chance. In 3 (goin for 4) years of Sziget I’ve learnt to not complain about any pick, as long it’s not trash trap or trash mainstream house; also I survived to Rihanna, Blink 182, David Guetta and Calvin Harris I FEEL NOTHING ANYMORE

  23. Sziget FB: “Don’t forget this will be a teaser to the grand program variety of Sziget, expect many more early-2017!”

What does this mean? No headliners included in the announcement?

  24. This doesnt sound as a good announcement… i think we cant expect any headliner. It even worries me a bit of the complete line up… variety, what do we need to think of that?

  25. They’re probably waiting for prices to rise in order to earn more money. So, Yes i think it won’t be a huge announcement.

  26. translation of this announcement:

“We booked shitty bands as always, but hell we have inflatable dragons!!”

  27. I dont really care if they announce headliners or not.. i want to see quality artist even if they are smaller 😀

  28. But I just don’t get this announcement policy 😀 They are literally telling us that there will be some names out this Thursday but they will be sh*t so we should rather ignore them and come back in January 😀 What is this about?

  29. That is a classic Sziget caption for first announcements, it really means nothing. It’s just for who doesn’t know sziget.
By the way I was expecting not more than 1 headliner, some a38, maybe a sub.

For me the meaning is: “maybe you’ll like some of those artists, but you’ll see also some sh*tty djs and radio rubbish as always.. But don’t worry we’ll have something good in the next months.”

  30. Hey ! Announcement soon, time to come back here !

I hope a wild Gorillaz will appear before August 🙂

  31. I think they’ll announce something similar to Frequency:
    Mumfords (headliner)
    White Lies (sub)
    Moderat (A38 headliner)
    Glass Animals (A38 headliner)
    Rise Against (Afternoon MS)

Hopefully they will also announce Baaba Maal at some point so they could play at the World Music Stage and join Mumfords and Sons on stage during their headline slot.

  32. Wont be much impressed by an announced like that… it would be kinda feeble my my pov

Gorillaz wont be touring, im sorry

  33. Well, exactly. Maybe they meant “for the surprises come in 2017”. That announcement is realistic (and great for me, with 3 must-see acts).

  34. Great names for Flow Festival!
The XX, Flume, Aphex Twin, Moderat, Maceo Plex, Vince Staples, London Grammar, Angel Olsen…. and Lana Del Rey (also for way out west).
I would love them to start with something like this!

  35. And also the first names for Lowlands, that’s from 18 till 20 august.

    Mumford & Sons
    The xx
    Iggy Pop
    Ben Klock
    Cashmere Cat
    Mac Demarco
    Mura Masa
    Noord Nederlands Orkest
    Nothing But Thieves
    Ty Segall
    Tove Lo

  36. I think will be Lana Del Rey, White Lies, Iggy Pop, Nothing but the Thieves, Moderat, Billy Talent and maybe The XX

  37. Grape Festival (SVK 11-13 August) confirmed
    Two Doors Cinema Club,
    Cigarettes After Sex,
I think its very likely that all except Aurora will be on Sziget.

  38. Those announcements really change the game, Im so excited!

Moderat, Ben Klock, Dixon and Flume are the best you can take on the Electronic august-touring scenario, and Sziget should not lose this chance to bring some real quality to A38 (talkin of Moderat and maybe Flume).
    Other names worth the mention are Foreign Beggars, Sub Focus, Maribou State and Mount Kimbie;

    Since Tove Lo has been announced to Lowlands, I can see likely for her or Icona Pop to be announced in this announcement;

    Marilyn Manson also in touring (announced for the Wacken), but he’s really bad on the stage lately, so I guess we can be happy if he wont be considered Sziget material. On the metal side I also consider August Burns Red (all in all last year we got Parkway Drive, I mean);

    Talkin’ about folk, yeah, probably Mumford and Sons will be headliners (makes no difference to me, tho), but I would also keep an eye open for Angel Olsen, Oh Wonder and Mac DeMarco, also for Julia Jacklin and Jenny Hval (even tho they aint totally folk-related);

    By the Punk side, I keep pointing my fingers to Rise Against and Antiflag, maybe also Billy Talent. Hope they wont take in consideration that mummy of Iggy Pop, but still an option;

    I can see likely a Main Stage headliner’s spot for The XX (if Mumford and Sons wont be announced and supposing they are forced my invicible will to release an headliner – thing I can see likely, since any other festival is releasing at least one headliner and it means a lot in term of competition), an important spot on MS for Alt-J and/or Lana del Rey and an early spot in MS or important one in A38 for Nothing but Thieves and/or Two Door Cinema Club;

Hope they wont forget that At the Drive-In are in tour

  39. looks like August festivals gonna have some trouble in ’17. that loawlands announcement is beyond pathetic.

  40. Also Øya announced its first names:

Lana Del Rey, The Hellacopters, Lars Vaular, MØ, Mac DeMarco, Jenny Hval, Vince Staples, Angel Olsen, Car Seat Headrest, Nils Bech, BadBadNotGood, Charlotte Dos Santos, Julia Jacklin, Sigrid, Silja Sol, Stein Torleif Bjella, Hester V75, Daniel Kvammen andJohn Olav Nilsen & Nordsjoen.

    Fingers crossed for Mac DeMarco.

  41. RHCP to Sziget in 2017?

They are in Europe next year too for festivals, many already annonced. Anyway their last day so far 31. July in Iceland.

The most requested band from Sziget in their history but they never get them..

    Maybe this year?

  42. @fsfsf
What? That’s not a reason. That was their own tour and this is a festival.

    13/14 Sept 2016 Finland — 29 July 2017 Finland Helsinki !Again!
    27/28 Sept 2016 Madrid — 13 July 2017 Spain

If Sziget could afford them and they can fit into their schedule it could happen. They liked Budapest when they were here.

  43. Super excited now! I’m not into super big names, I prefer really good a38 acts or medium MS.

(Not really for tomorrow announcement, because i don’t think Sziget will reveal the best part of the lineup, but for 2017 lineup in general)

    The xx
    Mac DeMarco
    Ben Clock
    Maceo Plex
    London Grammar
    Aphex Twin
    Two doors cinema club
are all artists I freaking want to see. Having all them in the august festival game is exciting.

    Alt J
already seen them and had fun even if they’re not on my wish list, they’re welcome.

  44. @GAB
yeah it’s the perfect reason. They weren’t here for like 20 years they/sziget are not interested to come back within less than year.

  45. @patrick: Thanks! I would pick from that list: alt-J, Anti-Flag, BadBadNotGood, Bad Relegion, Billy Talent, Caro Emerald, Foals, Franz Ferdinand, Mac DeMarco, Mumford & Sons, Pixies, Placebo, Rise Against, The National, The Vaccines, The xx, Two Door Cinema Club, White Lies

  46. I guess with that list you already complete a big part of the sziget line up. I hope they will pick Elbow as well.

I guess they will put kensington instead of caro emerald as dutch act on the main stage.

I guess we wont get any hints before tomorrow morning.

  47. @fsfsf

Gerendai from Sziget last year said their most requested band everyyear is RHCP. They try to bring them every year and they tried to bring them this year too. (as you know they did their own gigs instead)

So you think if they could make it happen this year they would skip because the played in Budapest 11 months ago? I dont think so.

They are not some bullshit band or some recycled band from the past.

Following your logic there would be no Prodigy that often.
(unless you work for Sziget and know their policy in and out 🙂

  48. Die Antwoord announcing more european festivals, any chance of them returning? Very impressive last year

  49. For me another reason why sziget chose to keep a low profile on this announcement is:

Sziget is an “independent” festival, while the majority of the other festivals are related to giant music labels, and I suppose there is some industry mechanism that makes sziget not free to announce artists whenever it wants, but only after a certain time from the labels’ favourites festivals.
And of course also for the price increasing.
Both this to things I suppose

  50. I hope you’re all wearing your angry hats, 1h and it’s going to be worst announcement ever. But I don’t think it will be a problem, just keep your hopes way way up and unrealistic, don’t look what we got, focus on what they didn’t announce (this time). Luckily this is first one, so you guys have plenty of time to be annoyed and become offended by Sziget and how they do it all wrong. Enjoy 🙂

  51. yeah….life is hard….and the hardest thing you can try…is to go to the most disappointing festival in europe…the sziget-festival…

feel free to feel bad… :-))

    I love it…..

  52. hope for Mumford (Main head), Moderat (A38 head), Alt-J (Main sub), Benjamin Clementine (A38 sub), Foals (Main sub), Franz Ferdinand (A38 head), London Grammar (A38 sub), White Lies (Main afternoon).

Please no Steve Aoki and friends 🙂

  53. So much EDM in this announcement I hope that means we’ll get more rock in future announcements. Two Door Cinema Club, Bad Religion and Mac DeMarco are the only good part in it.

  54. God thats so bad… TDCC and Vince Staples – great, Major Lazer and Oliver Heldens – OK. The rest is just meh…

  55. Honestly in this announcement the only things I save are Oh Wonder! and GusGus, a part from this there is a reason why I thought that the 2015 lineup was the worse in 3 years I’ve been at Sziget.

So we have 2 headliners, does anybody know anything about the other guys?

  56. Ok not that bad after all. Although thats with the knowledge dramatic vegas and unlike mike are no headliner. If they are it will be a bad announcement…

Some nice acts i would like to see like two door cinema club and oliver heldens. All the others are ok.

  57. Ok. In that case i will sell my tickets with profit when the 7 days tickets are sold out 🙂
