Romania Music Festivals in August 2017. Could they overlap?

Romania is a large country with a history of turmoil, which has slowly began to catch up with the civilized West. One of the signs of its catching-up is its ever-growing festival scene. For years, Félsziget (Peninsula), Sziget’s sister festival, was its biggest event. After its decline, a handful of smaller but growing events took its place – the best example would be Untold, its biggest EDM festival, that attracted over 200,000 attendees on its opening event in 2015, and won the “Best Major Festival” award in the same year.

All through the summer, Romania is home to several festivals, yet we’re interested only in those happening in August. Below you’ll find the lineup announced by a few of them (so far, of course). Maybe they can give us a hint on what further names we can expect to show up in Sziget 2017’s lineup.

Rockstadt Extreme Fest 2017 (Rasnov, Romania – 10 to 13 August)

  • Nile (U.S.A.)
  • Opeth (Sweden)
  • Carcass (England)
  • Napalm Death (England)
  • Leprous (Norway)
  • Alestorm (Scotland)
  • Wolfheart (Finland)
  • Anime Torment (Czech Republic)
  • Ixxi (Sweden)
  • Zombie Attack (Ukraine)
  • Korpiklaani (Finland)
  • Fit For An Autopsy (U.S.A.)
  • Suffocation (U.S.A.)
  • Teethgrinder (Netherlands)
  • Necrovile (Romania)
  • August Burns Red (U.S.A)

Untold Festival 2017 (Cluj Napoca, Romania – 3 to 6 August)

  • Afrojack
  • Armin van Buuren
  • Axwell /\ Ingrosso
  • Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike (announced for Sziget end show)
  • Hardwell
  • Martin Garrix
  • Steve Aoki

Summer Well 2017 (Domeniile Stirbei, Buftea, Romania – 12 to 13 August)

  • Interpol (Sziget)
  • Birdy
  • Metronomy (Sziget)
  • The Kills (Sziget)
  • Nothing but Thieves

Awake Festival 2017 (Teleki Estate, Gornesti, Romania – 1 to 3 September)

  • Rag’n’Bone Man
  • Tom Odell (Sziget)
  • Subcarpati
  • Golan
  • Mary PopKids
  • Jurjak
  • Les Elephants Bizarres

While Electric Castle takes place almost a month before Sziget, their lineups tend to share quite a few names (thanks @Lazzy for pointing it out). Here are the names it announced so far:

Electric Castle (Cluj Napoca, Romania – 12 to 16 July)

  • Alt-J
  • Moderat
  • Nero
  • Noisia ‘Outer Edges’
  • A-Trak
  • Architects
  • Dixon
  • DJ Sneak
  • Âme
  • Metrik & Dynamite MC
  • Etherwood
  • Soom T
  • Axel Thesleff
  • Crazy P Soundsystem

Of course, these lineups are far from being complete, and they also tend to overlap with Sziget’s. As we stumble upon further names announced by further festivals, we’ll keep updating this list. Most events use the same strategy of gradually announcing their performers to drive ticket sales, which means that more names – perhaps important ones – might pop up later in the year.

Which performers on the lists above do you think might make it to the anniversary edition of the Island of Freedom this year?

  1. Of course but Electric Castle takes place almost a month before Sziget (July 12-16), while Delahoya (also in July) hasn’t announced any names for 2017 yet.

    * correction: Delahoya 2017 will happen in June.

  2. Same as said many and many times: there are names around, good names.
We all know by time that Sziget is mostly made of undercards more than big headliners, and that when they try to “play the Werchter” calling big names and spending huge amounts of money for single names they sometime fail badly (Rihanna anyone?). So I would rather to see Sziget focusing on what the like to do and see them do it in the best way they can: it means give us a festival focused on indie and electronic music (face the truth, TRVE METALHEADS) with the best names around focusing on quality more than mainstream importance.
Now it’s up to them, hoping we wont have to wait much for a new announcement…

  3. Is there crossover likely with that summersonic festival? it is VERY pop and I wouldn’t want all of it but I’d be happy to see Royal Blood, Dua Lipa and Zara Larsson – any chance?

  4. No,usually these two festivals don’t share any concert mainly for the distance between the two places … But this year Kasabian strangely will play in both…

  5. Yes, Sonic Mania 18 august with Kasabian, royal blood, liam gallagher. It’s like a pre party, the day before the actual Summer Sonic festival starts

  6. VOLT announcing new names on the 14th of February… does this mean that Sziget will announce on the 25th again? 😀

  7. I’ve noticed now that:
    – Woodstok Poland (3-5 ago) announced Prong and Slaves
    – Oyafest (9-13 ago) announced Pixies, Chance the Rapper, Thee Oh Sees and Testament,
    – Lokerse Festen (5-14 ago) announced The Offspring,
    – Way Out West (11-13 ago) announced as well Chance The Rapper
    – Summer Breeze (11-16 ago) announced Architects
    – Lowlands (19-21 ago) announced Cypress Hill (and this rules out Prophets of Rage, if anybody had doubt yet), London Grammar, Michael Kiwanuka, Architechts as well, Future Island, Glass Animals, Nina Kraviz, Robert Hood, Denzel Curry (THE MEME, THE MEME),
    – Dimensions (30 ago-3 sep) announced the first bunch of names and it’s awesome, among those: Nina Kraviz, Jeff Mills, Moderat, Grace Jones, Floating Points and Daphni

There have been more announcement since Sziget last release of names, but yet, I guess we can expect Architects and Chance the Rapper incoming, probably also Slaves, London Grammar and Michael Kiwanuka… Im not even talkin about the possibilities Colosseum has this year, tho

  8. Chance the rapper and Cypress Hill would blow my mind more than Eminem.
I’m still of the opinion this year august festival circuit has immense potential even if there aren’t the big names of June Glasto-Werchter period. So Sziget could build an incredible lineup with acts that are just enjoyable and good live.

Not even tho mention the electronic side of the thing, killer acts out there in august for A38 and colosseum

  9. i can’t wait for the full line-up already 😀 this year i will go only to Novarock(because they have a pretty good line up) / rEvolution Festival (because it’s near me .. btw it’s organized by the Exit stuff) / Sziget(cuz’ it’s an every year must) and the last will be Reading Festival (because of Eminem!! he is my icon 😀 )

  10. Yeah by the way:
soul singer SuCh wrote on twitter that yesterday at the Grammy party Alex da Kid (Eminem producer) told her the album is ready to drop. So in some days/weeks I guess he will release it together with some dates and we will know if he is the big name
