Placebo, The Prodigy, Armin van Buuren and more @ Sziget 2009

Boy, do we have great news for you today! The official Hungarian Sziget site has confirmed quite a few important acts for this year’s Sziget Festival. Here we go, then. First of all, The Prodigy will present their new album, “Invaders Must Die”, at this year’s Sziget Festival. So will Placebo, you’ll get to hear “The Battle For The Sun” first hand.

The Party Arena will be very animated this year, too, as Armin van Buuren will be making you all dance. Pendulum (that Szigetnews told you about first) are also 100% confirmed, so is DJ Norman Cook, a.k.a. Fatboy Slim.

The list of big names doesn’t stop here. The Orquestra Buena Vista Social Club will also be at Sziget Festival 2009.

But that’s not at all everything. There are more official names for this year’ Sziget, all announced at once. First, there’s Tankcsapda – the legendary Hungarian band will celebrate its 20th birthday on the “minus-1” day of the Sziget Festival.

Then we have the very much-requested Ska-P, but also Bloc Party and the Ting Tings. They will be joined by Calexico,  So Kalmery, 08001, Figli di Madre Ignota and Tiken Jah Fakoly (that we already told you about).

We’ve linked each name with their official site, to make it easier for you to check out the artists you don’t already know.

P.S.: with all the excitement, we forgot to list The Klaxons. They’re also confirmed for this year’s Sziget Festival.

  1. Which of these bands are headliners? – what do you think?

I think Placebo and Prodigy definitely are, and really hope that Fatboy Slim wont be one of the five “main acts”. Placebo & Prodigy are great but not too big names. Hope for Arctic Monkeys, Blur, The Mars Volta, Nine Inch Nails, and some big surprise for Day Zero. (NIN- Year Zero for Day Zero!!!)

  2. You have forgotten to list the Klaxons!!!

Some great bands in the first anouncement! I personally was bored to death by Placebo last time they played Sziget, but who cares if there are other great bands around… 😉

  3. nice, but I still have a question :): is this the “March 23th”, official announcement kind of thing (you know what I mean)?

  4. what the hell happened? last year we had graet names like r.e.m, iron maiden, the killers and even a graet pop aratist- alanis morissette. this year so far is not half as good!
i’m not saying that rise against, placebo, the prodigy and even fatboy slim are not good, cause they are.. im just saying that when you put theme next 2 any name i wrote above.. they are not half as good!
what about the rumers about limp bizkit, linkin park, arctic monkeys, gary moor, the killers, kings of leon and even astronomic names like mettalica or u2… i know sziget is not just about the cig shows.. its about the atmosphire, about hearing new bands and stuff… but i still thing we need at least 2-3 good names, like the names i wrote above..
im looking forword for some big stuff to come up.. i know it will happen.. sziget will not let me down.

  6. absolutely love the line up!!!
massive attack would be massive though, really hoping for them!!!

  7. The Dutch Sziget-site says The Offspring is confirmed…people have put it up on the last.fm page as well..

  8. well Hungary is not a big country… there are about 200 kilometres between Sopron and Budapest. So I think the answer is no they won’t.

  9. Heya, I just received the first official press newsletter for this year’s Sziget festival.

No new bands here (The Offspring are officially listed), but based on the wording of the text, Prodigy, Placebo and Fatboy Slim seem to be headliners and Bloc Party, Pendulum, Klaxons, Ting Tings, Ska-P and Offspring will be opening acts on the mainstage.

Based on this we will get two more headliners as well as a Day Zero act!

Two headliners on the World Music Stage will be the amazing Calexico as well as Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club (with Guajiro Mirabal, Jesus Ramos and Manuel Galban).

  10. Klaxons, Ting Tings and Bloc Party are awesome but pleeease get MGMT, The Kooks and (maybe if it’s not too much to ask…) the Arctic Monkeys too! I didn’t get too see Kaiser Chiefs, MGMT and The Kooks last year so yeah it would be great if they performed again (like how The Killers performed 2 years in a row or something)

  11. Ready for some more speculations?

FM4 just announced 11 new bands of their lineup. Usually a lot of the bands playing at FM4 are also on Sziget.

New bands are some already confirmed for Sziget:
    – Bloc Party
    – Ska-P
    – Ting Tings

some german bands of who I (as german) hope to see none at Sziget:
    – Peter Fox
    – Mia
    – Selig
    – Polarkreis 18

    and some international acts:
    – Heater Nova
    – Anti-Flag (at Sziget 2008)
    – Eagles of Death Metal (at Sziget 2007)
    – Kasabian (announced for Sziget 2008, but then canceled)

The only band I really would like to see is KASABIAN.

Also many of the V-Festival rumours are now confirmed:

    http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/v/chelmsford/2009/lineup.shtml#

There are already 3 bands confirmed for Sziget and V (Fatboy Slim, Pendulum and Ting Tings) and a lot of amazing V-Festival bands I’d like to see at Sziget (The Specials, Lily Allen, Happy Mondays, The Wombats, James, The Enemy, MGMT) – pick your own favorites… there are lots to pick from! 😉

  12. Well the Wombats would be cool and MGMT would be AWESOME …Lily Allen’s okay I guess and the rest are lame (e.g. Razorlight…) and some I don’t know…like Happy Mondays..never heard of them

I went on the fm4 website but it’s all in dutch or something :S …I can’t find the line up sections…what are the 11 bands?

  13. Oh nevermind I found it 🙂
and i meant german not dutch…I just mix up
    deutsch and dutch sometimes 😛

  14. …like Happy Mondays..never heard of them AHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH you’re sooooo funny, boy…

  15. No – it’s not! The Happy Mondays were pretty popular between 1989 and 1992. Many readers of this message board might simply be to young to know them…

Last week I was on an AMAZING concert of Grace Jones and I was really surprised how many people (my girlfriend inculded) have never heard of her… And she was a MAJOR star in the 80th!!! AND: Grace Jones was the only artist I voted for with the Sziget wishlist, which the whishlist didn’t automatically recognize – even with a very successfull recent new record many people seem to have never heard of her! 😉

  16. hahha yeah I was freaking BORN in 1990 so how am i supposed to know about them? (thought I know about obvious legends like Dylan, Bowie, Kinks, etc but that’s not the same…)

hahaha I know Grace Jones though 😛 Well I had no idea she was a singer but I’ve seen her in magazines… 😛
