The Lineups of Szigets Past (2009 to 2016)

There has been a lot of chatter about how Sziget’s lineups keep getting worse (or more “mainstream”) in the last few years. We’ve decided to take a walk down memory lane and look at the lineups of the festival since 2009 (this is as far as our records go back).

There are two things that influence the lineup of a music festival that make their presence felt in the case of Sziget, too – even if it considers itself (and it is considered by many) more than just that: the current taste of the prospective visitors and the availability of performers at the time of the festival. As Sziget is in August, the pool of talent they can reach out to is somewhat limited – some performers are on a break, others tend to play overseas in this time frame. There are also some other major festivals siphoning away some potential headliners – lead organizer Gerendai Károly has spoken about this phenomenon in a 2015 press conference. Against all odds, Sziget has managed to attract an ever-increasing crowd year after year, having to put up the “sold out” sign several times in the past.

For the list below, we’ve selected the headliners performing on the Main Stage only, and in the main spot of the stage.

  1. Sziget 2011 : Motörhead / Judas Priest / Bloody Betroot / Within Temptantion / Prodigy / Deftone / chemical brother / Prince / …..
The last édition multi stage multi music style .

  2. 2008 – Babyshambles, Exodus, Flogging Molly, Iron Maiden, Jamiroquai, Kaiser Chiefs, Meshuggah, R.E.M., Róisín Murphy, Serj Tankian, Sex Pistols, The Killers, The Wombats, MGMT, Volbeat (first year for me, oneof best line-up)

2009 – The Prodigy, The Offspring, Faith No More, IAMX, Fatboy Slim, Placebo, Buena Vista Social Club, White Lies,
Manic Street Preachers, Pendulum, The Ting Tings

2010 – Danko Jones, Fear Factory, Kasabian, Monster Magnet, Muse, Paradise Lost, The Hives

2011 – Pulp, La Roux, Kasabian, Hurts, The Chemical Brothers, Skunk Anansie, The Prodigy, Kaiser Chiefs, Manic Street Preachers, White Lies, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Deftones, Flogging Molly (best live-up ever for me)

and after that year no more metal stage, less and less metal-rock acts, DJ-s on main stage. this ain’t this sziget any more I used to have. visited 2008-2012 and 2014

  3. 2014 had the Mau5. I dont know why his name is bot on this list. Besides that, i thought skrillex was headliner and placebo subbed him..

  4. if we are 100% honest with ourselves looking back these line-ups they all feel bad and outdated, especially the main-stage.

good shows I’ve seen at sziget without the ability to remember the year are: Sick of it all, Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Enter Shikari (2x), Muse, Deftones, Ignite (with Jon Bunch RIP:( ) and that’s it, the rest of it were when i dragged there by a friend or the girlfriend.

  5. I enjoyed a lot 2014 but 2016 was special for me because of 3 concerts: M83 (best concert of my life), Muse (one of the bands I dreamt of seeing) and Sigur Ros (Never ever dreamt about it!!).

But 2014 had Deadmau5 and Skrillex which made me get into electronic music, so pretty special too 🙂

  6. I voted for 2011, but 2014’s one was very close to be that good.

Best concerts I’ve seen on the Island were Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in 2013 and Faith No More in 2009 (with a special mention for Muse in 2010).

  7. In terms of headliners, overall, 2015 seems to be the best. Robbie Williams was great, meanwhile Kasabian, Foals & alt-J had good gigs. Even KoL seemed decent enough. Florence + the Machine were the best headline performance. On the other hand, Major Lazer were crap.

Last year I liked Muse, BMTH, TLSP and Noel, but only Muse did a great show. The rest were just fine.

This line-up needs 1-2 great live headliners, as Muse or Florence + the Machine. Maybe Mumford & Sons is one of them, but there is need of one more. I don’t put Eminem / Jay-Z here, as they have to be instead of Rihanna. U2 / Gorillaz / The Rolling Stones / RHCP would do the trick and steal the show. Let’s what happens next…

  8. Anyway Sziget’s 2011 Metal Stage really looked like a Main Stage 2. I also remember the clashes that were devastating for a multi-genre music fan. I remember some of them:
    – Motorhead / Interpol / The Bloody Beetroots / Empire Of The Sun / Pulp / Suicidal Tendencies (that day at the same hour Ana Moura was playing on the Europe Stage and Prince went there to see her concert)
    – Kasabian / Crystal Castles / Judas Priest / Goose / The Chemical Brothers / Gotan Project
    – Verdena / Trentemøller (well, this was a bad clash for us italians)
    – The Prodigy / Deftones

And let’s not forget that Amy Winehouse was supposed to play and 30 Seconds To Mars were in the lineup just to replace her at the last moment.
