Top 10 Streamed Songs on Spotify, 2016

As the year comes to an end, the press is getting filled to the rim with articles and lists looking back at what happened during the last 12 months. As we all know, 2016 was a sh*tty year, with legendary artists leaving us for good, and all sorts of unexpected things happening. Whether this applies to the world of music, it’s up to each of us to decide – it’s all a question of taste, after all. Spotify and Billboard have also taken a step back, looking at the most popular songs of the year. Whether you agree or not with their list, the fact remains: these were the top 10 streamed songs of 2016.

The top 10 streamed songs on Spotify in 2016

10. Adele – Hello

Adele’s latest album 25 debuted more than a year ago, and broke quite a few records instantly – it has become the UK’s fastest selling album with over 800,000 units sold in the first week. “Hello”, the album’s lead single, has also broken a record: it has become the first song in the US to sell over 1 million digital copies within a week of its release. A year after its launch, “Hello” is still among the fans’ favorites, being the 10th most streamed song on Spotify this year.

9. The Chainsmokers Featuring Daya – Don’t Let Me Down

Released in February, The Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down” was an instant hit – it peaked at #3 in the Billboard Hot 100 list, and made it to the top 10 in countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, and the UK.

8. TWENTY ØNE PILØTS – Stressed Out

The Ohio duo made a name for itself with its fourth album, Blurryface, released in 2015. The album produced hits like Ride and Stressed Out, with the latter  “Stressed Out” peaking at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and number one on both Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs.

The band has tour dates announced until next May, with several stops in Australia.

7. The Chainsmokers Featuring Halsey – Closer

6. Justin Bieber – Love Yourself

With last year’s studio album “Purpose”, The Biebs has reached a performance nobody thought was possible: three of the singles from his album made it to the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds in 2006-2007.

Both Love Yourself and Sorry (below) are among the most streamed songs in 2016.

5. Rihanna – Needed Me

Rihanna is among the most popular pop divas today – four of her solo songs or collaborations are among the top 100 most streamed songs of the world this year. Needed Me, released this year on her eighth studio album “Anti”, received a Grammy nomination for the Best R&B Performance.

4. Drake feat. WizKid & Kyla – One Dance

Drake is also among the most streamed artists this year, with eight of his solo tunes or collaborations making it to the top 100. The Canadian rapper released “One Dance” this April to a great success: it was his first one to make it to the #1 spot in the US and Canada.

3. Justin Bieber – Sorry

2. Rihanna feat. Drake – Work

More of the above.

1. Desiigner – Panda

Desiigner – also known as Sidney Royel Selby III – released Panda almost exactly a year ago. The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in April, and was nominated for best hip hop video at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards.

  1. this is really an indication why I shouldn’t expect good music at sziget.
People really have noo taste and a desire to find good music.

Do you really listen to the biggest awful mainstream songs on spotify, while you can basically listen anything?? WHY???

  2. 21 pilots is the only song here, I could listen without a gun in my mouth. The rest is total crap and shit and shame to music.

  3. What was your favorite album of 2016?

A Moon Shaped Pool. When I knew that I was going to see Radiohead at NOS Alive I started to listen more and more and it’s (one of) my favorite band today! AMSP has some great tunes: I love Burn the Witch/ Identikit/ Present Tense, and as calmer songs Daydreaming, Decks Dark and True Love Waits.

Biggest deception: Junk, from M83. Not bad, just that I had very big expectations.

2017 is gonna be gooood with Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem and some others 🙂

  4. top 5 records of ’16 (in no particular order):

    Tiny Moving Parts – Celebrate
    Pinegrove – Cardinal
    Nothing – Tired of Tomorrow
    Frameworks – Smother
Boys Night Out – Black Dogs EP

  5. Im not really paying attention to the new releases every year, but I really fell in love with The Impossible Kid by Aesop Rock – by far greatest hip hop genious I ever knew about and that album is just WOW

Wish he was more famous / less underground to get the chance to watch him live in europe…

  6. My Top 5:
    1. Skepta – Konnichiwa
    2. Jamie T – Trick
    3. Kanye West – The Life of Pablo
    4. Kaytranada – 99.9%
    5. Biffy Clyro – Ellipsis

  7. My favorites:

    Daughter – Not To Disappear
    Lisa Hannigan – At Swim
    Keaton Henson – Kindly Now
PUP – The Dream Is Over
Explosions In The Sky – The Wilderness
    Deftones – Gore
Dj Shadow – The Mountain Will Fall
    White Lung – Paradise
    A-Wa – Habib Galbi
    Modern Baseball – Holy Ghost

  8. hey i have a question that i hope some of you can answer, me and my friends dont want to buyy a move in 3 days early ticket, but upgrade the camp to siesta instead, we basically want a better camp with more showers and less queue and more space for our camp, but if we dont buy the move in early ticket will the camp be quite packed or is it possible to gather our little gang and find a nice open spot to camp? And are there more showers and less queues?

  9. @Dexanimo, you can find a good spot on the shade even without pre-entering, at least so it was last year, just be sure to get into the island first in the morning. Also, I suggest you the Alternativa Camping over the other ones, just for personal experience: silent at night, best restaurant on the island, a little bit far from big things – I agree – but all in all you need to rest and you need not to be near the colosseum 24/7.
Not knowing the difference between the Bridge and Siesta, I assume that the first is trying to exit from the Island and earning independence and in the seconds you are suggested to wear sombreros, eat spicy food and to sing along “La Bamba” anytime you get the chance. Ofc im just kidding 🙂
