Magic Mirror – 15th Anniversary!

Although not entirely music related, here is the latest announcement for Sziget 2015:

Magic Mirror – the “hetero friendly” queer venue of Sziget Festival – is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. It will be hosted in a classic Spiegeltent, constructed in wood and canvas decorated with mirrors. The programs include round table sessions on LMBT issues, film screenings, variety shows with drag queens, acrobats, dancers, international and Hungarian performers, like Gloria Viagra, Sally Morell, Alex Shchukin, Sergey Timofeev, Szulita & Dennis and many more. Parties will continue till sunrise with DJs like Tama Sumo (Ostgut Ton, Berlin) and Manuel De Diego (Madrid), star DJ of Ibiza, among others.

  1. Is anyone actually visiting this stage? I’ve been only once and a guy offered me condoms while there was a topless wo(man) on stage. Never went back.

  2. This stage is a classic at sziget. Hungary is not as liberated as some and this stage is a nod to that from the sziget crew. i still remember the anti racism day a few years ago which was for the same sort of purpose.

As a gay male – the entertainment is certainly very dated and not to my taste, I’m more a muse/Metallica kind of guy, but the late night dj sessions can be fun. Its nice to have an accepting place at any festival. its very welcoming and a cool place

Glasto has low down, we have magic mirror.

  3. Not really what I was waiting for…
    Uhm, ok… yeah… funny, yes
*Add to the list in Sziget places who won’t visit*

  4. Magic Mirror is a cool place. It’s one of the historical Sziget Venues and I’m happy it’ll be back again.

  5. In all seriousness though, I don’t remember this stage all that exciting. I do think I went during the day though, is it good at night?

  6. somebody asked sziget italy if ellie goulding is headlining day 2, they told him that nothing is certain at the moment, she could be headliner , or maybe they could find someone bigger available. Quite honest. I think it’s just the same for sunday, our theory was obviously correct, they still lookin for.

  7. Magic Mirror is a fun venue, especially in the early hours. Ben in his post has already explained what it represents for Sziget and for Hungary. Suffice to say that a while ago the rightwing homophobes (still in power, btw) wanted to shut it down. There’s acrobatics, circus acts and queer shows. As a heterosexual male I watched (and thoroughly enjoyed) an impromptu performance where a guy got completely naked and covered himself in soap. I’d have preferred a woman, but still 🙂

  8. @why: so how do you interpret what they wrote? 🙂 obviously ellie is the biggest act on the MainStage at the moment on that day. They said “maybe the headliner is one of the names we already have in this day, or it could be someone else, we don’t know now”. So if they don’t find anyone she will headline, seems clear 🙂

  9. seems logic that if they’ll find someone to headline instead of ellie it will be someone bigger, no sense otherwise.

  10. I think it was just them saying ‘it hasn’t been officially announced that Ellie is headlining yet’. It hasn’t, and they probably don’t have the authority to confirm it, whether it’s the case or not.

  11. Right Eddie.
@Miguel – Ellie is a big name but not for everybody. So probably they can find one other name big like ellie but different style of music.

  12. This is so pathetic. A festival shouldnt count on luck and look for a headliner 2 months prior the event. This is even unfair to ellie. “you could be a headliner, unless we find a bigger name, but don’t worry we are bad at booking”

  13. How hard can it be, just call Live Nation and they will email you a list with artists and prices.
or am I being too simplistic here 🙂

  14. I was speaking to a guy who runs events at the weekend. He only books one day events with like one or two big acts a day, and he’s already booked his entire programme for NEXT year. Sziget either don’t even attempt to do this, or don’t do it effectively.

  15. But is always the same story… A38 organizers are working good, main stage organizers not so much…why they don’t exchange them?

  16. last year main stage was the best possible in my opinion, among all august festivals. This year they clearly have serious problems in booking. Main stage lacks some names it’s true, but I think the most important problems are stages like party arena and colosseum.. will they have day programs? do they really build such a big tent just for 2 djs per night? these are real questions for me

  17. Still wondering if some of you guys (Art) are threaten to come and pay the ticket with a gun. If not this is Sziget 2015, the lineup is almost full. Don’t like it? Don’t come. C’mon, months of complaining are so boring.

@bobo Party Arena and Colosseum’s international names are known. They’ll fulfill the rest with hungarian names and in my opinion this year Colosseum’s lineup is great if you like electro/techno/minimal: Vitalic live, Dixon, Ellen Allien, Gui Boratto, Marcel Dettman, Hernan Cattaneo, My Favourite Robot. Party Arena is simply not like it was before. We’re not gonna have a live slot at 19.30, for example. It’s gonna be like Balaton Sound’s Party Arena with some international acts and a lot of hungarian acts. For internationals A38 it’s still there.

  18. I hope that some of the slot of Colosseum and Party Arena still will belong to some international name. Still, I would be happy anyway even if my hopes were wrong.

About the Main / A38: this year they did a really big good work with the Tent, also, some of the main show should be playing in Main Stage to tell the truth (Knife Party, Dropkick Murphys, Paloma Faith, Infected Mushrooms, Interpol), meanwhile last year it was good but not the the best with some upsetting set (all the ambient – experimental ones, to me, like Mount Kimbie, Bonobo, Darkside, ISVN or smthg like that). The Main Stage last year was great, yeah, but the Korn-day and Macklemore-day I didn’t remember much fun (for sure it was the day 0 and 1)… This year is upsetting and nothing else, but it’s not totally their fault

  19. In fact when they announced Florence as one of the first names, this year looked like a bomb like the last year, but then… “Ellie Goulding”, “Martin Garrix”, “Avicii”, “The Script”

  20. Let’s hope to hear something soon. I can accept that they don’t get top names all of the days, but not if they start cutting on the number of acts. I’d rather have them announce the names as they are confirmed, rather than in batches. I remember a Norwegian festival who dropped one name every day for almost a month, that really kept the tension up.

I might be wrong, but weren’t the schedule released with the last announcement (20th of June) last year? I’m going to Werchter next week, and I’m quite sure that I knew about potential clashes on both festivals before that festival last year. Nice to know in case you need to decide about where to see an artist performing both places.

  21. Robbie didn’t even sell out ’til now… What a bad choice 😉 I think I’m gonna watch him 10-15min anyway.

  22. At this point I’m happy with any international name that will be added to the line up. Seems that we will have another week without an announcement.

  23. @Palinka Robbie will sell out. Last year’s sold out day sold out that day, not before. And, even if I think Muse are so much better than Robbie Williams, at Pinkpop this year Muse’s day had 55.000 attenders while Robbie’s day 70.000. So I’m very confident about the sold out of Day -1.

  24. @bender: thank you for the info! yeah, colosseum is extremely good this year, i’m not expecting any other big name 🙂 I just think it’d be good to announce even the small names and the hungarian ones, first because it means visibility for them, and also cause so we can check them out on youtube or spotify etc.. 🙂
don’t need any other big, just need someone new to know

  25. I don’t think a “big” surprise is likely at this point, but I’d love to be proved wrong.

  26. Last possibility I can think of is that Sziget is waiting for Glastonbury to start because we share something big with them… pretty much the only reason they’d be holding a name back IMO.

  27. Maybe they’re going to announce all the good stuff from Glasto- Chem Bros, Jon Hopkins, Caribou, Hot Chip, Todd Terje, Run the Jewels… or maybe they won’t.

    Maybe it’s Kanye… maybe it’s not.

    Maybe it’s Beck… maybe it’s not.

I don’t really care any more, I’m resigned to defeat!

  28. Wait, calm it down. It’s not a total failure. Or better, for now it’s not.
Considering the fact that Sziget still has 1 month to announce the last names he still got chances to do a good work.

Even if the names picked would be not-that-huge it wouldn’t be a total failure. The real failure would be to admit they didn’t have the names, that they have holes in the main stage programme and to fill it with hungarian names or moving names from the A38 to the Main Stage (if it is possibile to do) or calling to perform bands that obectivelly aren’t Main Stager .

If they call it close calling two good names which are not that waited for to headline the festival (like Caribou, George Ezra, Beck or people like those, and not LP, Offspring, Muse o Chems), it would not be that failure, cause even in the lack of big names there still will be plenty of bands to attend for.

They still can do a good and honest work, it wont’ be the best festival this year and they won’t sold it out, but whatever

  29. @Yelo: Agreed. I just want something to fill the obvious gaps in the lineup (main stage, party arena, ect.)

  30. @Jane Doe: Not this year . Too many artists who have failed to confirm with a very good budget . The Kings of Leon do not comfort me at all …

  31. @FAB + Eddie: How would you like if I say your girlfriend bad at her job?

i think kings of leon would be far better than most of the other possibilities. they have never been here, and they’ve got many many good songs

Kings Of Leon are very good live. They always have been.

    My dream (but realistic) headliners:
    12th Kings of Leon

    bobo says:

If it’s kings of leon, another worthy headliner and some good undercard the lineup will be very competitive in my opinion

    Impossible to please everyone.

  32. I don’t want to seem a bitch buuuuuuuut if we count all the post asking for:
    -Chemical Brothers
    -Linkin Park
(And it gooooooes on and on)
We got more messages about those bands than about KoL. So I think it’s not fair to say “they ask us em”. We ask you for a lot of stuff, maybe even more important than a single headliner, like variety, like the right importance give to a guitar solo, like a Metal Stage more than a silly Tribute Stage, like transparency in social media communication.

Those are weeks that Sziget Italia (in my way of view things the best media of the sziget from years) is posting “XXX’s gonna play on YY, with them will play those others guys”.
We are tired. Give us the rest of what we paid you for. I gave up on lot of stuff to be on the island this year and what makes me really pissed off is the fact that you are lying to us.

To hide pretending everything is fine or there’s no band on tour won’t give you the results you got in 2014 and there will be no excuses. Even other festivals even more little had issues with lineup but they work it out time ago. Sziget announced 6 bands in last 5 weeks as Mike said and it’s a shame and nothing else.

Sorry for the rage, but it really piss me off when someone try to make a fool out me with the story of “the consumers asked for this”

  33. @Yelo: How I lie? People ask for Kings Of Leon, yes. People ask for other acts too, yes. I wrote they do not? No, I not lie.
My hubby try everything, he is best. You try book Chemical Brothers, Caribou, Muse, Linkin Park? Sok szerencsét! Impossible to please everyone.

  34. We will have another set of announcement and we are coming out with the daily schedule as well. Just received this in relation to any announcements before July…I’m enjoying Jane Doe’s trolling.

  35. I find a little of hubris in your words.
First of everything, in the words you told to FAB & Eddie (How would you like if I say your girlfriend bad at her job?) you are totally wrong, I repeat, in case someone forgot: we paid, we had a great service in the last years we want that this year too and for now we are totally disappointed, maybe because we still ain’t on the island, but I can tell you for sure that the last year I was truly more excited in front of this year.

When I say “we” I suppose most of the people who write on this forum, which IMO are also the ones who care the most for this festival (if it was not I would spend my time somewhere else), and when i tell “you” I don’t mean you Jane Doe but all the stuff.

I know that you all are trying hard but this is your job and we pay for that. Also, why the hell should I try to book them? To make them play in my dining room?

  36. *out of role*

Mike, good seen! Yelo, I trolling 😉

    *back in role*

My hubby is the best! Come see him! He is DJ at Sziget every year!

  37. Listen to me, i do not want to walk around with a shirt on which the largest printed name is ROBBIE WILLIAMS (and second Kings Of Leon), so pick up the phone, called Muse, Chemical Brothers (or Linkin Park, Beck, Underworld, Blur , Oasis, Paul McCartney, ACDC, Rolling Stones …) and close the matter … thanks

  38. Please guys count/look after before complaining. They are your “six announced acts since March”:

I accept if you don’t like these acts but please be correct.

  39. 16 of April, 2 months and 4 days ago you announced Bizkit and Avicii.
So it is ok, then, uh?

  40. Hey Jane! If my wife (she’s not just my girlfriend) booked a 7 day festival headliner set up as six pop acts and Kings of Leon, I wouldn’t need to criticise her. She’d do it herself! We came to Sziget once before, and we were disappointed with the line up. 2013, and you still had Blur, Nick Cave and Biffy Clyro headlining, amongst others. There is a clear focus on pop acts this year, and the people on this forum don’t really want that. You may sell some tickets this way, but not enough. The proof is in the ticket sales, and you know them better than me. I assume they’re massively down on last year? Peace!

  41. P.S. Just because we loved it, doesn’t mean we can’t want and think it should be better. The thing with Sziget is that it could be the greatest festival on the planet, but it’s not and it won’t be. There’s too much of a focus on radio play acts and not enough on genuine critically acclaimed artists. Those artists are touring, but the festival hasn’t booked them. I know people who book bands and DJs for events and they plan over a year in advance who they’re going to book. Sziget must do this too, so they had the opportunity to plan the line up and they planned a pop orientated line up. There are loads of alternative bands in Europe at the time of Sziget and the festival hasn’t drawn them in.

  42. And by the way, I never, ever requested Kings of Leon. I didn’t want them and they were never on any list that I wrote on this site. I’m happy that they’re playing, because the alternatives across the other days are, frankly, awful for my tastes. They’re good live and I will enjoy them. I won’t complain about them playing, but don’t make out that I wanted them, because I didn’t.

  43. muse played in hungary with their last good album (black holes) in 2006. only about 3000 ppl were interested, the had to close down 2/3 of the arena. now everybody is crying for them. kind of pathetic 😀

  44. Sorry for my fourth successive post, but I don’t want to come across as being completely negative. The Colosseum line up is incredible, it has quality headliners every day (arguably two on Wednesday) and I’ll be there every night as long as I’m feeling up for it. Whoever put that stage together deserves a lot of credit, it’s not only big underground names, but also a range of genres and labels represented. I hope that the festival books some of the same names next year and realises that booking the same names year in, year out on dance line ups isn’t really a problem as their sets completely change.

I actually don’t think there’s a problem with the size of the acts on the main stage at all. If John Doe was looking to book a line up of big acts with no genre considerations it’s hard to argue with Robbie Williams, Florence, The Script, Alt-J, Kasabian, Avicii, Kings of Leon, Ellie Goulding, Major Lazer and Martin Garrix on it. The problem is who the acts are, not the size of them. Of those acts, only three could be considered as being alternative, including none of the dance acts, which is a real pity because someone like Faithless, Chemical Brothers or Underworld, who are all touring, would have rounded the dance line up out beautifully (I haven’t even mentioned A38 or Arena yet, and there’s Nero, SBTRKT, High Contrast, Jaguar Skills etc, again a range of genres).

I think my major concern, and it’s one shared by the vast majority of posters on this site, is that after midnight Sziget has booked comfortably the best major festival line up in Europe. There are actual dance festivals with worse line ups than the Sziget night time programme! Unfortunately, the day programme has suffered. I don’t know if it’s a direct impact or not, but the A38 this year is really weak for me, as is the Main Stage. Both of them seem crammed with acts with one hit, and I think that given there’s only two big stages at Sziget during the day and they only have 4/5 acts on each, programming it is a really difficult job to get right. I don’t want to be horrible to the people who are responsible, but it just hasn’t worked for me at all.

It doesn’t help that everything gets announced so late. I don’t understand why Sziget has a problem announcing acts at the same time as all the other festivals that are on at the same time as Sziget, but it really makes the festival look bad. The honest truth is that this Sziget line up is only about four or five good artists away from being a really good line up for me, but it’s just over a month to the festival and I have no idea whether it’s going to deliver those artists, and naturally you end up thinking that it won’t I’d like to know either way so I could just chill out about it rather than writing increasingly long posts on an Internet site about it!

  45. @Eddie: I not wrote you want them, you wrote they are good.

    *out of role*

I not work for Sziget, but friend does and told me who is John Doe. You and I opinions are much same and I try make jokes of John Doe 😉 Ticket sales? I not know. Maybe ask John Doe? He must know.

    *back in role*

    VOLT is soon! 🙂

  46. what does it mean? we’ll share an act with volt? I think only fatboy slim is available ahahahah 🙂

  47. First 10000 tickets with promotional price sold out in few days.. I can imagine great part of the 65euro tickets is already gone, if it won’t be sold out it will be close to. IMO
